Charlie Shafer: Cache High School’s First Wrestling State Champion – Presented by Moonlight Mechanical

In a historic achievement for Cache High School, senior Charlie Shafer has etched his name in the annals of the school’s history by becoming its first-ever state wrestling champion. His journey from a young, eager wrestler to a celebrated state champion is a testament to his dedication, hard work and unwavering spirit.
“It feels unbelievable because of the level of competition that I had to overcome,” Shafer expressed, reflecting on his momentous victory. His triumph is not just a personal milestone but a significant achievement for Cache High School, inspiring current and future athletes alike.
Shafer has been an integral part of the Cache wrestling program since its inception. “In the beginning of the program, we had very few coaches and a very small team. Now we have a full coaching staff, a full team and enough funding for camps to teach us new things,” he noted.
His wrestling journey began in the second grade, driven by a simple yet powerful ambition: to be the best wrestler in the state. “I went to camps during the summer to learn new moves and to get better. I also knew I needed to be at every practice even in the summer so I wouldn’t fall behind and I could stay in shape,” Shafer recalled. His relentless pursuit of excellence, attending camps and never missing practice, laid the foundation for his success.
Known for his incredible work ethic, Shafer attributes his drive to his inherent competitiveness and the high expectations set for him. “My competitiveness has always motivated me to be the best and the expectations that people would have on me were always high. This made me give my best effort in the practice room and at every tournament I would go to,” he explained. This tenacity was crucial in overcoming challenges, particularly his initial lack of confidence. “One of the biggest challenges I had faced was my lack of confidence. I then later realized I had the same chance as everyone and everyone is beatable,” he said.
Shafer’s journey was supported by a strong network of coaches and family members. “Coach Justin McCracken and Coach Moore were my first coaches that have greatly contributed to my success from when I first started to now. Coach James Smith brings us to the best camps that he can get to help the entire team get better. He puts together a tough schedule with many hard tournaments throughout the year to help us prepare for the state tournament. Coach Fox and my brother, Duncan, helped train me to improve technique and to prepare for the state tournament as well,” he shared.
Reflecting on his state championship experience, Shafer emphasized the importance of focus and effort. “My mindset at state was to focus on one match at a time and to give my best effort,” he stated. A pivotal moment in his season was going undefeated in Grapevine, Texas, which bolstered his confidence significantly.
Shafer’s historic win is more than a personal triumph; it’s a beacon of possibility for his teammates and future wrestlers at Cache. “It showed my team that anyone at Cache can be a state champion if they work hard and spend their extra time practicing.”
Charlie Shafer hopes to be remembered not just as Cache High School’s first state champion, but as a great teammate who inspired others to strive for greatness. His legacy will undoubtedly serve as a cornerstone for the future of Cache wrestling.
