For Cache High School senior Ella Marie Mebane, sports are about more than the scoreboard. Whether she is competing at power forward on the basketball court or holding down third base for the softball team, Mebane brings a determined mindset shaped by hard work, family and a desire to keep proving herself.
“What motivates me most is knowing that I still have more to prove to myself,” Mebane said. “I’ve had moments where things didn’t go the way I wanted, and I’ve learned that I can’t control every setback, but I can control what I do next.”
That resilience was tested last basketball season when an injury sidelined Mebane for roughly eight weeks. The time away from the game was difficult, but it gave her a stronger appreciation for every opportunity to compete. Years of practice, lessons, travel, early mornings and late nights have helped Mebane learn to persevere, even during moments when confidence is hard to find.
One of the defining memories of her basketball career came in 2025, when her team reached the State Semifinals. Taking the state court and earning the opportunity to wear the OSSAA badge made the experience especially meaningful.
“It really showed me how much work it takes to get that far and how much that work pays off when everyone is completely dialed in and working toward the same goal,” she said.
Mebane’s greatest influence remains her late father, who was among her loudest supporters. He regularly drove hours to see her play, often accompanied by the family dog, Pearl. Today, Pearl lives with Mebane, and seeing Pearl and her mother in the stands helps keep that connection close.
“My dad may not be in the stands anymore, but his influence on me hasn’t gone anywhere,” Mebane said.
Her mother has also been central to her journey, making countless trips to practices, games, camps and tournaments. Their yellow Gatorade pregame tradition remains one of Mebane’s favorite routines.
Away from athletics, Mebane is involved in FFA and shows pigs while working to keep her grades a priority. After transferring from Chattanooga to Cache for her senior year, she embraces the responsibility that comes with representing a new school and community.
“I know I’m representing more than just myself,” Mebane said. “I’m representing my teammates, coaches, family, school and all the people who have supported me along the way.”
