Cache High School senior Mya Carrisalez brings speed, discipline and a team-first mindset to the softball field, where she plays center field and embraces the responsibility that comes with covering one of the game’s largest areas.
“My position is Centerfield. The toughest thing about playing center is that you have a lot of ground to cover. Luckily, I am fast so that makes it a little easier.”
Carrisalez said her approach at the plate also depends on paying close attention to the defense. As a slapper, she looks for opportunities to use her speed and challenge opposing infielders.
“When I go up to bat, I read the field and I see where 1st and 3rd are playing at. I do this because I am a slapper and can easily drop a bunt down when the corners play back.”
Her outlook on athletics is rooted in faith, perseverance and a desire to encourage others. Carrisalez said sports have helped her understand that her role extends beyond individual performance.
“Athletics has taught me so many life lessons that I will always carry with me, but overall, it has taught me that I have one purpose. And that purpose is to serve the Lord! My purpose doesn’t lie in the sport itself, but to serve Him in and through it. My favorite verse is Colossians 3:23 which says, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.’ I love this verse so much and try to live by it each day. Sports has also taught me to be more loving and encouraging. I have learned that mistakes and errors will happen, but you have to take them and learn from them. Sports has taught me about persevering and having determination as well. We have very early mornings, late nights, hot games, and close games. All of these things have taught me to never give up.”
She credits her parents, especially her father, for providing a steady example of hard work and support.
“I am inspired by my Dad. He always motivates me to be my best. My Dad is a very hard worker and has taught me to always give my best when doing anything. He and my Mom are always at my games and are always there for me. They are the biggest encouragers and supporters in all that I do.”
Carrisalez also values the relationships built through softball, track, FCA and student council. She hopes to give teammates the same encouragement she once received from former Cache center fielder Kayla Timmons.
“Kayla left the biggest impression on me. She taught me alot and always encouraged me. I looked up to her so much and strive to impact my other teammates in the same way she did for me.”
