Mattison Gonzales, a sophomore pitcher and first baseman, has quickly become known for her dedication both on and off the softball field.
Family remains at the center of Gonzales’ motivation. “My biggest inspiration is my family because they always support me, encourage me to work hard, and push me to become the best version of myself,” Gonzales said.
In the classroom, Gonzales counts English as her favorite subject, but it’s a former teacher who left a lasting impression. “My favorite subject is English, and my favorite teacher is Coach Totte. He made learning algebra enjoyable for me during my 8th grade year and always encourages me to do my best,” she said.
On the field, Gonzales values the unspoken bonds that hold a softball team together. “The best unwritten rule is that in softball, you always have your teammates’ backs. Camaraderie and teamwork are everything—you have to work together, encourage each other, and trust one another to succeed,” she said.
That sense of togetherness extends to how she views her role on the roster. “What I enjoy most about being a team member is the camaraderie we share, supporting each other through every challenge, and working together toward a common goal,” Gonzales said.
Playing two demanding positions requires a specific mental approach, according to Gonzales. “The hardest part about being a pitcher and first baseman is staying focused and consistent. As a pitcher, I have to stay calm under pressure and trust my pitches. At first base, I have to stay alert and be ready to make every play,” she said.
At the plate, Gonzales keeps her focus simple. “My purpose when I step into the batter’s box is to stay confident, trust my preparation, and help my team any way I can. I want to have a good at-bat, stay focused, and compete until the very end,” she said.
Beyond the diamond, Gonzales credits Malia Tani of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma as a major influence. “Malia Tani of USAO has left a big impact on me because she has always supported and encouraged me. She has taught me to keep working hard, stay positive, and never give up, both on and off the field,” Gonzales said.
Gonzales stays active in her community through student council and by coaching youth softball, calling it “rewarding to give back to the young athletes of my hometown.”
